Welcome to Sharing One's Surplus (SOS)
What is SOS?
Sharing One's Surplus (SOS) is a team of people from the community and members of Mission Covenant Church who acquire corporate surplus food and volunteer to help distribute the food to families within the community that can use it.
Who runs SOS?
It is coordinated by the Diaconate Board of Mission Covenant Church, and volunteers from the church and the community staff the distributions.
Where is SOS?
SOS is held in the Multi-Ministry Center of Mission Covenant Church, 5161 South County Road P, Poplar WI.
When is SOS?
It is held on the second Saturday of each month. The doors open at 9:30 a.m. for registration (everyone who participates must register) and the food distribution starts at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 noon (it may end earlier if the food supply runs out).
Do I have to be a member of the church to participate?
No, all are welcome, anyone who gets hungry qualifies!
How much does it cost?
Everyone who participates is asked to make a $30.00 cash donation (no checks or credit cards) to get a "share" of food available at the distribution.
What will I get?
You will receive an abundance of grocery items. Some of the items handed out at SOS may include: potatoes, frozen potatoes or hashbrowns, fresh produce such as lettuce, corn, green beans, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, bananas, watermelon, yogurt, and cereal with several choices of bread products. You will be offered the items that are available at the distribution and you may decline and item if it is something that you would not use. Make note: we do not know what food items will be available until the truck actually arrives. A list of food items will be posted at the entrances so you can see what is being distributed.
What do I have to do to participate?
Come to an SOS event (second Saturday of each month) any time after 9:30 a.m. to register and give the $30.00 donation. You will get a ticket with a number, which you must have to go through the distribution line. The distribution starts at 10:00 am., so there will be a short wait, but there are chairs set up. When your number is called, you will go through the food distribution line where the volunteers will hand you the food items. It is very helpful if you bring your own large containers for your food (examples are 2-3 large boxes, plastic totes, laundry baskets or a cooler). Carts may be available at the church for you to use as you go through the distribution line, but you may also want to bring your own cart or wagon if you have one. At the end of the distribution line, we ask that participants bring their food to their vehicles. Volunteers are available to help you load your food into your vehicle. Hold onto your ticket, because if there is food left after everyone has gone through the distribution line, you may have the opportunity to go back through the line at no additional cost.
Can I be a volunteer at SOS?
Absolutely! Since SOS is run by volunteers, we are always looking for folks who would like to help. To volunteer you must sign a volunteer waiver. On the distribution day, volunteers arrive at 8:00 a.m. to help set up, unload the truck, stack and organize food, re-package food if needed, hand out food, and clean-up at the end of the distribution. Volunteers pay the $30.00 donation and receive a red ticket and go through the food line ahead of the public who have a blue ticket.
Please call Mission Covenant Church at 715-364-2738. If no one is available to take your call, please leave your name, phone number and message, and someone will return your call.
What are the dates of SOS?
Sharing One's Surplus happens on the second Saturday of each month.
